In 1970, Popol Vuh became the first krautrock group to use an electronic synthesizer, to create what would be known as "kosmische musik". The bands Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, and Cosmic Jokers (all linked by collaboration with Klaus Schulze), would follow suit in the years to come. Faust also made use of synthesizers and tape manipulation in a way foreshadowing the noise rock of the future.

In 1972, two albums incorporated European rock and electronic psychedelia with Asian sounds: Popol Vuh's In den Gärten Pharaos and Deuter's Aum. Meanwhile, kosmische musik saw the release of two double albums, Klaus Schulze's Cyborg and Tangerine Dream's Zeit (produced by Dieter Dierks), while a band called Neu! began to play highly rhythmic music. By the middle of the decade groups like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Amon Duul, Grobnitt and GuruGuru had made scene. In 75 Kraftwerk even had the first German hit in America with Autobahn.

On the other side of the Wall, these bands tended to be stylistically more conservative than in the West, to have more reserved engineering, and often to include more classical and traditional structures (such as those developed by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht in their 1920s Berlin theatre songs). These groups sang in the German language, often featuring poetic lyrics loaded with indirect double-meanings and deeply philosophical challenges to the status quo. The best-known bands representing these styles in the GDR were The Puhdys and Karat.

The liedermacher stayed also active in the seventies and added more rock influences in their music. Artist were Peter Maffay, Der Ton Steine Scherben (with Rio Reiser) and Udo Lindenberg. True schlager is brought to the public by Katja Ebstein, Mary Roos and Freddy Breck. That this music styles still sells very well is other European artists release german sung, schlager like records. Mina and Milva (italy), Dalida and Mireille Mathieu (France) and Vikki Leandros (Greece) all releases several german sung singles. The other way round is the instrumental music of the orchestra of James Last Germany’s major export product in the seventies.

Hi-NRG Disco started in 1976 at the United States as an underground, faster and more electronic form of disco. The first commercial hit of the genre was Donna Summer's "I Feel Love".  The record is produced by Italian/German producer Giorgio Moroder at his Musicland studio in Munich. This music is picked up by Schlager star Marianne Rosenberg who makes the first vocal European Hi NRG hit record with Ich bin wie du. The style is soon followed by other European artists like French Sheila & B Devotion, Italo Disco in Italy and German producer Frank Farian. With acts like Boney M and Eruption he scores internationally. The electronic beats in Hi NRG and Krautrock gradually grow out to be more teutonic which is significant for later genres like house and industrial.
