Lis Sørensen

28 May 1955

Lis Sørensen's career began when she was in fifth grade in Brabrand got Holger Laumann as a music teacher. He inspired her to join the girl group "De Fem ", who released two singles with children's songs arranged by Laumann. She later had the opportunity to sing solo on the album It's So Easy from 1970 med Tears , which was Laumann orchestra on stage. In the 1970s she studied to be a music teacher at Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium in Aarhus . In 1974, she and Anne Linnet teamed up in the band Shit & Chanel , a pop-rock band composed entirely of girls. The band released four albums in the Seventies with growing success. Sørensen’s accessible and trained voice also popped in other bands as background singer in established bands such as Gasolin', Gnags and Lone Kellermann. By 1979 Shit &Chanel was on the verge of being disbanned with Anne Linnet focusing on her solo career. She was approached by singer/songwriter Sebastian so sing in his entourage, a collaboration that would turn out a fruitfull one with Lis singing in his band for many years to come. She first appeared on his album ‘Tiderne skifter’. Meanwhile Linnet also asked Lis to join in her Anne Linnet Band together with Sanne Salomonsen combining the three major female rocksingers of Denmark in one band. Under influence of Linnet and Sebastian she started recording her first soloalbum ‘Himmelen Ned på Jorden’ in 1983. The success of the album made her focus primarily on solo career backed by a band that includes her husband, Jan Sivertsen , also known as the drummer of Tøsedrengene. Her other confidents are Poul Halberg and Per Frost on guitar and bassist Jette Schandorff. The commercial peak she reached with sales of 350,000 copies of the album ‘Hjerternes sang’, whose title song was written by Sebastian.

In 1993 she thought it time for a subtle style switch from her regular sound and recorded the album ‘Under Stjernerne Et Sted’ together with hip-hop's producers Soulshock and Karlin, who worked with samples. The album contained the radio hit ‘Brændt’, a Danish translation of an English song that would later become a huge international hit for Natalie Imbruglia as 'Torn'. Two more albums and compilation album followed in the Nineties. The 2000 album ‘Rose’ was entirely written by Sebastian and was followed by a tour with a 16-man acoustic ensemble. To kick off of this big project she undertook the one off band Cowgirls with Sanne Salomonsen and Tamra Rosanes making simple poprock again in 2001. Then it would take 6 years before the next solo album was released. Another compilation album was unveiled in 2007 cotaining 26 tracks plus two new ones, while the deluxe edition also includes a live CD and a DVD featuring a concert from Kronborg Castle.

Lis Sørensen has written a couple of musical theater pieces and sometimes even stood on stage, including in ‘Sarai’ at Bellevue Theatre in Copenhagen in 1985 .

What do we think:

DB: Her bright, clean and unsentimental voice has made her a fine interpreter of rock ballads and lyrical melodies. And she must be a very nice person to be around with or to have around since so many artist want to work with her more then once. She is very loyal to a few songwriters that write lyrics for her (Lis usually writes the music herself). Among them of course Sebastian and Linnet but also Elisabeth, sister of the Gnags-brothers. Honest and serious musician with whose material you hardly can go wrong.
