About:

Triana was a Spanish progressive rock band from the 70's and early 80's, heavily influenced by flamenco, hailing from Andalusia. It was composed of Jesús de la Rosa Luque (Sevilla) (voice and keyboards), Eduardo Rodríguez Rodway (Sevilla) (voice and guitar) y Juan José Palacios "Tele" (Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz) (drums and percussion).

The main goal of the band was to merge flamenco music with progressive rock. The band was influenced by other progressive rock-bands, like Vanilla Fudge and the early King Crimson. The band developed a hard progressive and experimental sound during its three first albums. Later, the sound turned into more fresh pop.

El Patio, Triana's debut, was released in 1975, and it had a strong influence in the post-Franco young people, despite a poor marketing and promotion. Two songs pointed out in this album, and became standards of the group: "Abre la puerta" and "En el lago". This latter is a surrealistic evocation of a lysergic trip. El Patio is considered the founder of a rock-style developed in Andalusia called, in Spanish, rock andaluz.

The second Triana's album, Hijos del Agobio, was released in 1977. The band maintained its pure progressive rock style. However, in this album Triana developed politic lyrics. The death of Jesús de la Rosa on October 14, 1983 meant the end of the group. After this Eduardo Rodríguez Rodway persued a solo career while Juan José Palacios "Tele" kept the legacy of the band alive. In 1995 the band was remembered with the TV documentary Triana una Historia. The success of the documentary led to a compilation album with outtakes and leftovers (next to classic songs): Palacios “Tele” also started a new version of Triana and recorded two albums: Un jardín eléctrico (1997) and En libertad (1999). In 2002, Tele was hospitalized due to an heartattack. He died on July 8 which leaves Eduardo as the only living member of this unique group.

What do we think:

PR: XXXX

DB: I found three records of Triana in the cheapos section of a record store years ago. I had no idea what kind of music it was but it looked obscure and why leave them there when they were only 2,50 Euro a piece. At home i was taken by the originality of the music, in fact i never heard music like that before, mixing blues with traditional Spanish music. Mind you this was long before i started to search for European pop. Since then the price of their records amongst collectors has tripled. Our Spanish friends also ensure us that Triana has a high status in Spain so they cannot be missed on this site.
