Will Tura is the stage name of Arthur, Knight Blanckaert. Tura is a singer, musician (he can play the piano, guitar, drums, accordion and harmonica), composer and songwriter. Tura started singing when he was only nine years old, covering Gilbert Bécaud and Nat King Cole. Tura's first producer was Jacques Kluger, and later his son Jean Kluger.

Will Tura's first hit was 'Eenzaam zonder jou' (So lonely without you) in 1963, for which he wrote the melody, and Ke Riema the text. In a newspaper survey, the song got elected the biggest hit in Flanders ever, and it has a place in the Eregallerij (a honorary gallery of the Flemish song, an initiative of Belgian copyright collective SABAM and radio station Radio 2) since the first edition in 2000.

Many hits followed in various musical styles, including rock 'n roll, gospel, country and rap ('Moa vent toch', from 1992, in the West Flemish dialect). In 1984 he made a tribute album to Elvis Presley, together with Elvis' band. In 1992 he also released his first Tura in Symfonie, performing with a symphonic orchestra.

In 1987 Will records the album 'Ouvertura', together with the London Symphony Orchestra and Robert Groslot. In 2002 one of Tura's dreams came true, recording an album entitled 'De mooiste droom' (The most beautiful dream) with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1995 Will was made cultural ambassador of Flanders.

In 1988 Will had a car accident, and the song 'Mooi, 't leven is mooi' (Beautiful, life is beautiful) about it becomes a megahit in Flanders, and becomes the most frequently played song of 1989 according to SABAM, with Clouseau's 'Anne' in second place.

In 1990, various rock 'n roll artists from Flanders created 'Turalura, rock doet Tura' a tribute album for the artist. In 2005, Tura's 65th birthday was celebrated elaborately in the Flemish media, along with the release of the cd 'Viva Tura'.

In 1993 Tura sang 'Ik mis je zo' (I miss you so much) and 'Hoop doet leven' (Hope feeds life) at the ceremony for the deceased King Boudewijn of Belgium. In 2001 King Albert II of Belgium knighted him, after being made an Officer in the Order of the Crown. At the engagement party of Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde in 1999 gives a mini-recital.

What do we think:

DB: OK, we’re not gonna make friends with this one. Filing a performer like Will Tura in one line with regular pop and rock artists is for some like eating a sausage with whipped cream. Dirk Houbrechts, who started and maintained the Belgian pop and rock archive until 2001 had the same doubts. And yet, Tura is undoubtedly a major influence on Belgian popular music. Yes it is Levenslied or Schlager and is (by the rock-purists) not considered high culture. But then again, if he would sing in English he would be heralded for his country like lyrics and music. He wasn’t honoured by the young Belgian pop and rock artists in 1990 for nothing. And he does fit the framework we laid upon ourselves with this site. So if you have to have just one song of Tura that says it all just look up Eenzaam zonder jou (featured on album No2) and feel the tears roll down your cheek.

PR: If you are talking about Belgium 'pop'music, you just can not exclude Will Tura. With his classic song 'eenzaam zonder jou' he secured himself a place in the Belgium pop spectrum for ever. And well deserved that is. Should you buy any other records? Beware, listen to some of his albums before you actually buy them and make sure this is what you want to add to your collection...
