Rokas Radzevičius (1972)
Aistė Smilgevičiūtė (29 October 1977)

The band was formed just after the political turn in the autumn of 1991. Staring out as a folk-rock band their output soon also consisted of exhibitions of underground art and non commercial festivals (like "Free Tibet" in 1995). Their music was released on self distributed casettes. In 1995 they worked with the puppet theatrecompany Miraklis and joined the performance ‘Šv. Stepono 7 pro memoria’ (St. Stephen 7 Pro Memoria) dedicated to the history of a ruined building in the old town of Vilnius. An international breakthrough came when the band delivered the song ‘Žydinčių moterų džiaugsmas’(The Joy of Women in Bloom) for the German feature film ‘Kaukazo vakaras’ (An Evening in Caucasus). In 1996 they became the back-up band for young singer Aistė Smilgevičiūtė. Two albums were released under her own name and she would become a regular guest at  Skylė  performances in the years to come. The cooperation with Aistė also enabled the band to get a compilation of their best songs released on CD in 1998. They also performed at the World Youth Festival in Lisbon. A year later they accompanied Aistė to the Eurovision Song Contest in Jerusalem with the song ‘Strazdas’ ending 20th. This boosted their (inter)national fame. Their second album was another soundtrack made for Miraklis called ‘Žmogus ir Aušrinė’ (The Man and the Morning Star) which was intended for the celebration of the new millennium. At the beginning of 2000 Skylė together with Aistė Smilgevičiūtė recorded ‘Babilonas’ which would mean their breakthrough to the main public. That year Skylė organized an international youth project called ‘Uniformos’ where young people from various European countries created and performed a musical based on the topic of democracy. At the end of the year this musical was performed once again in Vilnius and in Magdeburg simultaneously, connecting the two stages by means of video broadcast on the Internet. In 2001 Radzevičius created the rock opera ‘Jūratė ir Kastytis’ for the Sea Festival in Klaipėda.  The main roles were played by performers like Marijonas Mikutavičius, Kostas Smoriginas, Olegas Ditkovskis, Vladas Bagdonas and others. In 2006 the whole opera would be recorded as a feature film and released in DVD. A last soundtrack for Miraklis called ‘Vilniaus legendos’ (The Legends of Vilnius) was done a year later. By 2003 the solo-projects by Radzevičius began to take their toll on the band. In the summer of 2003 they stopped their active participation in music projects with international young people with the project "Tilt" and the band gradually fell still. In this period Radzevičius worked on another rock opera called ‘Žuviaganys’ (Fish Shepherd).

The band was resurrected in the autumn of 2005 with a renewed band and Aistė as permanent member. The album ‘Povandeninės kronikos’ in 2007 was showered with awards and critical acclaim. An long period of concerts and touring commenced ending in performing the album with an orchestra in Vilnius and Kaunas. The following compilation album ‘Sapnų trofėjai‘ again brought an extensive touring of which a DVD was shot at Vilnius’ St. Catherine’s Church.  In 2010 the band started the recordings of the album ‘Broliai’ (Brothers) is dedicated to the fighters of Lithuanias freedom (guerillas) with the aim to memorize and honour their resistance activities.

What do we think:

DB: Skylė is more a collective then a straightforward band with Rokas and Aiste also having solo output and band members popping in and out. But all in a friendly atmosphere so it seems. Too watch Skylė live is watching craftmanship with a warm heart for their local culture. It's folky in a rock/pop manor. The important thing about this band is that it is not an act, they sincerely believe in what they do and the music they create. This is not some treehugging-loveedovee-blendingwithnature band. This is honest music made by very professional musicians. It may not pay off at the ESC, it surely does in our Hifi-set.
