14 January 1947

Born in Berlin, Ina began to play music at a young age. At 11 she learned to play guitar and at 14 she joined the church choir. At the same age she also begins her first band called The Lucky Girls. She studies grafic & design at the academy of Cologne in 1969 and became very active in the student protests of the time. Also in Cologne she writes her first song ‘Ich habe abgetrieben‘ with very feminist lyrics. With ‘Wenn du so bist wie dein Lachen’ ('If you were only like your smile') she joins the German pre-selection for the Eurovision in 1969. She ended only at the tenth spot but it does give her attention from the music industry. The song gets her a recording contract and in 1977 she releases her debut ‘Ich sollte eigentlich ein Junge werden’ ('Actually I should have become a boy').

After this debut she forms a steady band around her which she calls the Ina-Deter-Band. The band makes three albums, but without much commercial success. Untill 1982 when the sound of ‘Neue Männer braucht das Land’ ('The country needs new man') falls in sync with the Neue Deutschen Welle music stream. The title song was a hit in Germany and reached the 13th spot in the charts. The album is followed by the albums ‘Mit Leidenschaft’ (1984) and ‘Frauen kommen langsam – aber gewaltig’ (1986). The intervals of two years come due to the fact that Ina pays much attention to her lyrics. This works for the lyrics but makes it hard to break to the mainstream in the German market.

In 1996 Ina announces a break as a recording artists to pay attention to other interests like writing screenplays for the theatre. At the end of the nineties she makes a comeback with an entire new band. Especially at the start of the millennium Ina is almost constantly on tour. In 2001 she creates the theatre program 'Voilà - Lieder von Édith Piaf in Deutsch', in which she performes Piaf’s chansons with a small orchestra. After the tour Ina falls ill and is unable to perform or record. In 2006, now completely recovered, she moves back to Berlin. To get her career back on track she rerecords eleven of her hits for the album 'Ein Wunder' and starts touring again in 2007.

What do we think:

DB: Ina Deter is not very known outside Germany. Maybe her music is to German for European standards although she definitely does not makes schlager music. The albums I know all are in sync with the time incorporating new wave, synthipop and reggae influences. Ina is a sympathetic singer with maybe not the best voice but she compensates that with some nice songs over the years and she should earn more attention.

PR: Very charming personality, but also very 'German'. Her songs and lyrics are of high quality. She continuasly developed her musical direction and therefor she deserves our respect and a place on this website and the European popscene. Being such a creative and inspired artist of your own, I do not understand why she turned to interpretations of Piaf though.
